PRESS REVIEWS between 2000 - 2003

THE STAR TONIGHT: 29/02/2000
"The big news of Dance Umbrella 2000, so far, is that women are making a major stand as choreographers and assertive creative dancers. This trend was strongly evident on Programme 2 with Strings (a work in progress) by Gladys Agulhas, both major additions to the South African repertory."
By Adrienne Sichel

THE CITIZEN: 01 /03 /2000
"It was Gladys Agulhas` exploration of Strings which bind, suffocate, manipulate and create musical harmony that thankfully sustained interest. She, Portia, Caroline, Zwelethu created resonance between them like an animated cat's cradle, and it's a work in progress which could turn out to have real substance."
BY Marilyn Jenkins

Mail & Guardian: 03 / 03/ 2000
"Now it seems as if the black women are starting to find their feet as makers of contemporary dance. Agulhas is aware that crafting skills is part of making dance works. She successfully uses form and content in a holistic way to underpin her work, a subtle, visually textured dance, which shows choreographic development for Agulhas. Strings were funded by the National Arts Council."
BY Jill Waterman

THE STAR TONIGHT: 07 / 03 / 2000
"Paradoxically, so far this year there has been an emergence of choreograph-performers who not only prove to have developed a process, but create, or present, personalized work with intellectual or even philosophical thrusts. To name some names: Gladys Agulhas, etc."
BY Adrienne Sichel

THE STAR TONIGHT: 22 / 03 / 2000
"The winners of the 1999 FNB Vita Contemporary and Dance Awards, presented on Saturday night, represented pioneers and current young movers and shakers. Gladys Agulhas and the late Wendy David were singled out, for another special award, for their creative collaborative work as well as their teaching and choreographic development input to community -based groups. Agulhas also received a Special Stepping Stones Award for her commitment to the Kliptown Arts Foundation. This dancer, teacher and choreographer was also named, as a recipient of an FNB Vita Young Choreographic Grant. The commissioned works will premiere at the 2001 Umbrella."

Sunday World

"Agulhas brings a touch of multimedia into her work "Meetings on the Edge." Through this visually spectacular work, whose videography was supplied by Aja, Agulhas expresses her view about the labels that are placed on women and methods to overcome them. It deals with the states of women in this country in which they are faced with the evils of rape, crime and violence.

Star Tonight
Gladys Agulhas` Meetings on the Edge was in effect collaboration with video -maker Aja Marneweck. Her struggle for equilibrium, through detailed minimalist or sweeping movement, is textured by Declan Randall's lighting, which integrates the fragmented levels of reality.

DANCER HAS RUGBY REFS ON THEIR TOES
